Murder Mysteries are activities for (large) groups where everyone plays a role and tries to figure out a mystery. It’s a mixture of a social game and a detective story.
Traditionally, they’re about solving murders over the course of dinner, but you can take this concept to many different places and themes. Maybe people have special powers. Maybe it’s not about finding the killer but finding a pirate treasure. Maybe “evidence” is spread over multiple rooms.
In all cases, every guest will receive a booklet/paper with their character and backstory, and they’re required to socialize and talk to extract those secrets from others! In murder mysteries, your currency is information (… and reading body language).
Murder mysteries with a more “family friendly” theme can easily be played in classrooms or at birthday parties. More serious murder mysteries are great for dinners, team-building, or adult get togethers.
Why would I be interested?
- If you have a large group of people to entertain for several hours.
- If you love cozy crimes, detectives, murder mysteries, and associated genres.
- If you want to have a new proactive experience, but don’t want to go somewhere else or learn complicated rules.
- If your group likes social deduction games (like Werewolf/Mafia), but wants something a bit more structured where everyone gets to keep playing/guessing until the end.
Why would I not be interested?
- If you are alone or have a very small group. It simply doesn’t work (or is not fun at all) at those player counts.
- If you have a conservative group of players. Many such mysteries are, as expected, about death and other adult themes.
- If your players can’t read very well. They must be able to read their character booklet and understand it, because they can’t just ask others for clarification.
- If your players are very shy or introverted. Of course, we do our best to help break the ice and pull people into the activity, but in the end a Murder Mystery Party only works if everyone is acting out their character.
