This subject teaches Science. More specifically, it teaches the common major fields within science,
- Technology (Coding, Computer Science)
- Biology (Nature, Climate)
- Chemistry
- Physics & Engineering
It also teaches the general idea behind science and the scientific process. Large parts of this subject could be named “Logic” or “Problem Solving” instead.
The first resources on this topic provide a gentle and general introduction. Even young kids will be familiar with scientific concepts like a light turning on or the weather changing. Once this baseline is established, teaching moves on to more specific topics in each field.
How To Teach It
Below are some general notes about teaching this subject as a whole.
- Make it practical. We use science to solve problems. Scientific inventions are used all day every day and brought us where we are. There is never a reason to make science education abstract or theoretical!
- This can mean experiments, of course. Actual physical tests to show how things work or how to build something. It’s great if you can pull this off, but likely too expensive and too hard for most people. That’s why …
… our resources provide the next-best thing: games, activities, puzzles, easy projects. A way to simulate scientific concepts and ask Apprentices to really understand them, because they need to solve an interesting problem with them!
If a scientific concept is worth teaching, then there’s likely a practical example or problem to solve. Start with that. Let Apprentices ask why and how. Let them identify something that could be optimized by “applying science”. (By the time theory becomes important, Apprentices are usually ready to start a job in that field and thus have a reason to dive into the textbooks.)
What Is (Not) Included?
The field of Mathematics is its own subject. It’s simply too important and too big to be included as part of this one.
At this moment, we do not sell physical products. There are many great companies that create science experiments or science-related physical toys. If you can spare the money, we recommend buying such a package once in a while. It’s often better to have something tangible and to actually play with something in your hands.
Our resources are all printables or digital. Video games, puzzles, science-based escape rooms, you can still do a lot of fun stuff that way.
